Makhno Studio

Description

Ukrainian artist, ceramicist, and architect, Serhii Makhno, has honed an iconic design vocabulary for over twenty years, spanning architecture, interior design, sculpture, and objets d’art. Since its inception in 2003 in Kyiv, Makhno’s studio has become a reflection of the artist’s multi-disciplinary vision- housing a ceramic workshop, furniture, and lighting design atelier alongside the team of architects and designers. Across mediums, Makhno’s body of work embodies the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic and philosophy from which the artist draws his inspiration. Makhno's series of lights exemplify his artistic sensitivity, whether small or monumental, each featuring a highly textured, sculptural silhouette of organic shape. Makhno, along with his team of local artisans, hand-form each of the ceramic pieces in their Kyiv studio before tediously layering multiple glazes, giving the surface its recognizable highly textured skin. Makhno creates timeless, contemporary works anchored in traditions, as he intertwines his Ukrainian cultural and design legacy with inspirations drawn from the timeless beauty found in Nature.
