PARADOX

Ateliers Courbet is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition ‘Paradox’ by Moroccan artist Hamza Kadiri, opening November 2025 at Ateliers Courbet Gallery (134 Tenth Ave., New York, NY 10011). The exhibition will unveil Kadiri’s latest sculptural pieces alongside a selection of earlier works, presenting the artist’s evolving dialogue with wood and his recent experimentation with solid charcoal.

Hailing from a long lineage of master woodcrafters, Kadiri’s practice is rooted in a profound understanding of his materials. Sculpted in his Casablanca studio, each piece balances technical precision with an instinctive, contemporary sensibility and produces objects that are simultaneously functional and boldly expressive.

The exhibition features an armoire, tables, a console, and a credenza, demonstrating Kadiri’s remarkable ability to translate material knowledge into diverse, large-scale forms.

The armoire’s intricate, puzzle-like surface results from months of experimentation with charcoal — a material the artist chose for its capacity to reveal subtle nuances from a monochromatic surface.

Kadiri creates forms that embody Morocco’s rich artisanal legacy while expanding upon it with bold artistic expression. His sculptural language is informed by the natural qualities inherent to each carefully sourced piece of wood, and by working with little intervention beyond hand-carving and traditional techniques, Kadiri allows the organic material to guide his process, resulting in works of contemplative depth and striking visual impact.

The works presented in ‘Paradox’ represent Kadiri's ongoing exploration of the dialogue between woodcraft tradition, material experimentation, and contemporary form — demonstrating how ancestral techniques can be reinterpreted through innovative material applications.
