CGA | M. GAMPER

Description

J. HILL’s Standard ‘CUTTINGS’ collection has been designed by Italian-born, London-based designer Martino Gamper. As the ultimate contemporary craftsman, Gamper has brought his creativity and expertise to J. HILL’s Standard throughout their ongoing collaboration. Martino Gamper creates as he cuts and sculpts the crystal, drawing instinctive silhouettes and sleek lines. The result is a series of three distinctive cuts that were translated into a family of functional tableware. Like carved sculptures, the glasses and carafes of the ‘Cuttings’ series feature strong, intuitive marks confidently hewn out of the surface of the lead crystal. The fingers naturally seek out the smooth hollows and crisp ridges of the cuts of the crystal, enhancing the tactile experience when handling the glass. The Cuttings series includes a champagne, wine, and beer glass and a carafe that can also be used as a vase.

Martino Gamper

Martino Gamper (b. 1971, Merano, Italy) lives and works in London. Starting as an apprentice with a furniture maker in Merano, Gamper went on to study sculpture under Michelangelo Pistoletto at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. He completed a Masters in 2000 from the Royal College of Art, London, where he studied under Ron Arad.

Working across design and art venues, Martino Gamper engages in a variety of projects from exhibition design, interior design, one-off commissions and the design of mass-produced products for the cutting edge of the international furniture industry. In 2007 He famously created '100 Chairs in 100 Days' by reworking furniture that had been dumped on the streets, which resulted in a beautifully mismatched family of objects.
