Gijs Bakker, born 1942 in Amersfoort, Netherlands was originally trained as a jewelry and industrial designer at Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and the Konstfackskolan in Stockholm, Sweden. Bakker's designs have included jewelry, home accessories, and household appliances, furniture, interiors, public spaces, and exhibitions. Co-founder of Droog Design and revered teacher at Design Academy of Eindhoven, Gijs Bakker has played an influential role in the contemporary Dutch Design movements as a thought-leader and a world exhibited design artist. His work has been actively collected by internationally acclaimed museums including The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, H.W.D. Collection, and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. In 2005 he was the subject of a retrospective exhibition (and accompanying monograph) "Gijs Bakker and Jewelry," which traveled from Stedelijk Museum s'-Hertogenbosch to museums around the world, and his work has been published in numerous books and journals. Jan Matthesius is one of the Netherlands’ most recognized contemporary silversmiths and jewelry designers. Jan was trained at the Vocational School of Schoonhoven. He entered the guild at the Association of Silversmiths and Jewelry Designers in the Netherlands in 1978. In addition to his own work, Jan collaborates with Gijs Bakker with whom he creates the Jewelry collection chp...? jewelry, which stands for Chi ha paura...? (Who’s afraid of...?)”. The conceptual jewelry line was founded by Gijs and Marijke Vallanzasca. Jan has mastered time-honored metalsmith techniques working with a variety of materials including gold, silver, tantalum, titanium aluminum, glass, and gemstones. He co-founded the now-famous Dutch collective Droog Design in 1993 and Chi ha paura...? (Italian for "Who is afraid of...?") in 1996, a foundation aimed at expanding the understanding of jewelry beyond the frame of decorative accessories.
A revered teacher, lecturer, and consultant, Bakker heads the Masters Program at the Design Academy Eindhoven. He is highly regarded as one of Modern Dutch Design’s most influential artists and thought-leaders.
