For the 2023 Miami edition of Design Miami/, Ateliers Courbet is pleased to present Primal Nature, a group installation featuring eleven artists whose biomorphic forms explore how organic materials and shapes of the earth and body inform their respective design practices. On view December 6-10 at Booth G13.

Taking inspiration from archaic designs in the natural world–both telluric and living organisms–these artists incorporate anatomical structures into their designs, physically, materially, and in the conceptual narrative. Skeletal frameworks drive not only the design process and concept, but the production of each work. The presence of hand-crafted elements will be consistent across a wide range of materials, each specific to their respective regions and historical techniques.

In the gallery’s fifth presentation at Design Miami, Ateliers Courbet will inaugurate the representation of two artists, French sculptor Philippe Anthonioz and Mexican multidisciplinary artist Héctor Esrawe. The gallery will also unveil several new collections all of which result from the collaborations between Ateliers Courbet founder Melanie Courbet and highly skilled artists and artisans, including three new designs by Pieter Maes, as well as works by Ethan Stebbins and Mauro Mori. These collections are a part of Editions Courbet, a program through which the gallery invites international artists and designers to visit and collaborate with the master craftsmen and ateliers it represents. Each collaboration follows a common thread, aiming to highlight the inspiring work ethos and craftsmanship mastery behind every piece. The pieces by Anthonioz and Esrawe, as well as the Editions Courbet collections, will be complemented by new works from six additional artists: Hamza Kadiri, Raphael Navot, Veronica Mar, Jaume Roig, Gianluca Pacchioni and Herve Wahlen. The booth will feature a European oak end grain flooring by the master wood crafters from at the Paris-based ateliers Oscar Ono.
