Thierry Dreyfus
Thierry Dreyfus
Born in France in 1960, renowned lighting designer and multi-disciplinary artist Thierry Dreyfus has built a significant body of work since its first assignment by the Strasbourg Opera House in 1979. Incepted in 1985, his eponymous atelier in Paris quickly became one of the leading artistic direction and lighting design studios in the world. Esteemed by the fashion industry, Dreyfus has directed the lighting scenography for the Fashion Week runways of designers including Off White, Virgil Abloh, Azzedine Alaia, Jill Sanders, Diane Von Furstenberg, Comme des Garçons, Yves Saint-Laurent, Calvin Klein, and Victoria Beckham among others. His expertise and his poetic use of light as a medium have earned Dreyfus numerous public art installations, including notable commissions by the cities of Paris, London, and Shanghai, institutions such as the Chateau de Versailles, the Blouin Art Foundation in the UK, and hotels around the world.
In 2010, commissioned by the City of Paris to create an installation inside the cathedral Notre Dame de Paris, Dreyfus becomes the first artist ever authorized to install an art piece inside the historical monument. Most recently, the artist created a bespoke installation for another Parisian landmark with a video art piece commissioned by LVMH for the Cheval Blanc hotel's elevator at la Samaritaine. Known for the memorable experiences of his engaging installations and scenography, Dreyfus has established his mastery — sculpting, drawing, and projecting light from or onto buildings, interior environments, and objects for over forty years. While Light may count among the most intangible medium, the artist achieves to capture and share its essence as much through his large-scale, ephemeral installations as his personal work and signature collection of lamp editions. Available exclusively at Les Ateliers Courbet, Dreyfus has only recently made available his studio creations—small editions of lighting pieces and furniture reflecting the breadth and poetry of Dreyfus’ artistry, brought to an intimate and personal scale.
