Courtesy of the artist and the Almine Rech Gallery This collection of artists' rugs from Sabine de Gunzburg are hand-woven with the finest natural silk, hand-dyed, and hand-spun at the feet of the Himalayas by master-weavers using the time-honored rug-weaving techniques of the region. The rugs may be used on the floor or hung as tapestries.

Matthias Bitzer

Matthias Bitzer was born in 1975 in Stuttgart, Germany. Based in Berlin, the artist works with multiple media to create abstract sculptures, drawings, and paintings. Interested in personal identity, Bitzer plays with the visual language of modernism, combining figurative portraits with abstract, geometric designs.

His work often draws on the biographies of historical individuals, with his subjects including the novelist Joseph Conrad, the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, and the German avant-garde musicians Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya, who are known for their collaborations with playwright Bertolt Brecht. In 2010, Bitzer was the recipient of the prestigious Otto Dix Prize, awarded annually to an emerging artist from a German-speaking country.

Throughout his career, Bitzer has shown in nearly two dozen solo exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States, gaining him the attention of the international art market, and garnering him the respect and placement with notable private collectors and institutions. He is represented by the Almine Rech Gallery in Europe and Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York.
