Description

Our bespoke rug editions are made to order with the local supervision of our partner, Sabine de Gunzburg. Thanks to Mrs. de Gunzburg's commitment, our workshop at the feet of the Himalayas has kept providing work to the community of weavers. The rugs are woven with 100% silk threads hand-spun and hand-dyed with natural pigment at the workshop. The weavers are trained using the time-honored techniques of the region, carrying on a weaving heritage and cultural legacy with the greatest attention.

Sabine De Gunzburg

Sabine de Gunzburg is a purveyor of the highest quality hand woven silk artist edition rugs, born from her impeccable taste, technical knowledge and relationships with some of the finest craftsmen and contemporary artists in the world.

As an ardent traveler and collector, Sabine de Gunzburg’s venture into couture rugs stemmed from her realization that niche, hand-woven works, made to measure in custom sizes, colors, and motifs, did not exist. With six craftsmen based in Kashmir, her mind was set to “create thick rugs made of 100 percent natural silk that was more luxurious and resistant than wool”. The craftsmen have mastered a traditional know-how allowing an infinite variety of combinations, while integrating state of the art techniques, producing work as sophisticated as haute couture dress.

Sabine’s first efforts proved immediate success, and art rugs have now taken center stage, challenging the notion that only tapestries may be considered fine art. Her heritage also proves a foundation in the world’s of grand antiques, haute décor, and fine art. Sabine’s grandfather was a renowned Place Vendôme antiquarian; her mother worked first with Jacques Grange in the decoration department of Didier Aaron, and then took over the Saint Germain des Pres gallery of Lucie Weill, where she produced artist’s rugs with some of the 20th century’s greatest names including Fernand Léger, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Alexander Calder.

Sabine De Gunzburg’s collaborations include limited editions with Francis Picabia and Serge Poliakoff (certified by the estates), as well as contemporary artists Sam Szafran, Matthias Bitzer, Guillermo Kuitca, Mark Barrow, and Peter Peri.
