As part of their Omakase limited editions, Cool Hunting founders, Josh Rubin and Evan Orensten invite esteemed master-woodcrafter Shuji Nakagawa Mokkougei to create a modern design vessel inspired by the Ki-Oke time-honored techniques of Japan. The esteemed artisan created what was admittedly one of the most challenging pieces in his career. Drawing inspiration from Alvar Aalto’s iconic representation of the Finish archipelagoes with the Finlandia vessel series, Shuji-san achieves an object of elegant simplicity with impeccable, fluid, and continuous curves cut in Hinoki (Japanese Pine Tree). A functional work of art, the object embodies the essence of the precious wood as well as Shuji-san’s artisanal dexterity.
