Description

2016 marked the 50th anniversary of the Metropolitan Chandelier creation, designed by Hans Harald Rath for the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The Lincoln Center commission was ordered to Lobmeyr by the Republic of Austria as a gift in gratitude for the United States' aid in the European Recovery Program.

The inspiration for this design was supplied by the Architect of the Met, Edwar K. Harrisson who presented pictures of distant galaxies. Mister Rath presented his design concept to the architect and the Lincoln Center committee with a prototype made of potatoes and toothpicks. The very first ovation in the Metropolitan Opera house erupted when the chandelier rose toward the ceiling on its grand opening night, September 16, 1966. The piece was made of 49,000 Swarovski crystals and 1,000 sputniks. Fifty years later, the Metropolitan lighting collection remains the iconic and best seller of Lobmeyr’s lines of chandeliers.
