The Metropolitan Chandelier, was designed in 1966 by Hans Harald Rath for the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. The Republic of Austria commissioned Lobmeyr to make this design for Lincoln Center as a gift in gratitude for the United States' aid in the European Recovery Program. The Architect of the Met, Wallace Kirkman Harrison, provided inspiration with pictures of distant galaxies. Mr. Rath presented his design concept to the architect and the Lincoln Center committee with a prototype made of potatoes and toothpicks. The piece, containing 49,000 Swarovski crystals and 1,000 sputniks, glistened over a roaring audience as it rose to the ceiling on its grand opening night, September 16, 1966. Fifty years later, the Metropolitan lighting collection remains the iconic and best seller of Lobmeyr’s lines of chandeliers.
