KOMA
Founded in 2003 by Master Craftsman Shigeki Matsuoka, KOMA is a Tokyo-based workshop devoted to creating enduring, emotionally resonant pieces, each handcrafted using time-honored techniques. Born in Tokyo in 1977, Master Matsuoka began his career consumed with sketching and prototyping chairs, sometimes producing three a week, an intense rhythm that shaped his core belief: that true beauty emerges from comfort, function, and a respect for material.
Rooted in the idea that furniture should enrich daily life, KOMA operates from a small workshop outside of Tokyo, where Master Matsuoka leads a team of 15 artisans. Each design begins with his hand-drawn sketch, followed by a hand-carved prototype. This first one-of-a-kind piece becomes the foundation for each design, allowing the artisans to study the form and technique used by Matsuoka. Some elements—such as the carving of a chair's backrest—are reserved for the master’s hands alone, ensuring the highest level of craftsmanship in every piece.
KOMA works exclusively with North American walnut and cherry, selected for their durability, warmth, and expressive grain. The wood is air-dried for months before shaping begins. Each piece is handcrafted with meticulous precision—every cut made with intention to reveal the gentle curves, fine edges, and subtle textures that define KOMA’s quiet elegance. Throughout the drying and carving process, a single chair can take over three months to complete. For Matsuoka, furniture is more than a functional object—it’s a life companion. His work invites slow living, deep comfort, and lasting presence.
