This exhibition introduces Canadian studio CLASTE and its inaugural Tension collection by designer Quinlan Osborne. Hand-crafted in Montreal, the collection harnesses materiality and form to juxtapose lightness and heaviness, disequilibrium and stability.
The collection as a whole embodies the architectural and minimalistic principles that inform Osborne's design signature. Concealing any support system, To Float From Grace, How Fragile This Love and Where We First Met are hand-crafted with ultra-clear glass and rose onyx. The structural subtlety of these works is achieved by laminating tempered glass between two layers of stone and gluing the suspended plane to the face of glass panels. The lack of mechanical components endows a sense of weightlessness to each piece.
The pieces depicted here in Bianco Quartzite feature cantilevered elements that appear to defy gravity. With editions available in Nero Absoluto or Sydney Gray marble, Osborne selects a palette of mineral matters with inherent compositional strength preventing the top surfaces from toppling.
Unveiled in Canada in 2017, the collection received immediate recognition from the international press and design industry with significant awards including Archiproducts Design Awards 2017 and GOOD Design Awards 2017. While each piece first enthralls for its ingenious design, it is the technical prowess behind it that gives the collection a timeless elegance.
