VOID GREEN

Designer

Azadeh Shladovsky

Description

Informed by the artist’s personal experience with sight, Void represents the Braille letter “k” in its use of the two stacked circles. Void evokes a stillness of mind and body inviting the idea of negative space, as reflected in the circular cut-out in the lower half. The rigid contours of the wood meet the curvature of the circles and soft tactile experience of the velvet to create a chair that combines to create a unique visual and tactile experience, consistent with Azadeh’s continual push of the bounds of visual and haptic consciousness.

Azadeh Shladovsky

Azadeh Shladovsky

Los Angeles-based artist Azadeh Shladovsky materializes her longstanding interest in the human sense of sight and our visual consciousness through a cohesive body of work spanning fine art, functional art and design. An ongoing homage to her daughter who suffered from blindness at the age of two, her artistic expressions touch on the notions of perception and perceptual awareness, playing on spatial, visual and material juxtapositions. Shladovsky draws attention to how objects, functional or not, engage our senses.

The artist has shown an uncompromising commitment to her local California community of highly-skilled artisans since the inception of the multi-disciplinary studio in 2004. Each piece is handcrafted using sustainable materials emphasized by conspicuous colors or textures that highlight the artist’s intention and the visual awareness she wishes to inspire through her work.

Beyond supporting the creation of material work, Shladovsky’s studio was created as an opportunity to challenge preconceived notions of how artists collaborate and exhibit. Not only does this space represent the arc of her multi-disciplinary practice, its foundation rests upon engagement and community building. Anchored in the deconstruction of visual consciousness, the studio's program is solely dedicated to activating people and organizations who are working to shift our collective narrative around populations that remain unseen.
