The centerpiece of Azadeh Shladovsky’s collection is Iris, a table made from a single block of marble that has been hand etched to reveal a poem that Azadeh wrote in braille. Iris candidly speaks to how her daughter’s vision loss informs her work and furthermore traces how that personal experience occupies a space in her creative practice. As an interdisciplinary artist who works in film, conceptual art, writing, and design; she views each medium as inextricably linked. Iris is the first time Azadeh has so explicitly incorporated her writing in her functional work. In sharing more personal experiences and vulnerability through her work, she connects people and tells a story that is fulfilling and humbling for her as an artist. In creating Iris, she is reminded that the act of creative self-expression provides a medium for one to be seen and can be a powerful conduit for human connection.
